12 Marks of A New Franciscan Celtic Monasticism

Moved by God’s Holy Spirit in this time called the Global Village to assemble with the Tau Community of Saint Francis worldwide, we the Monastic members wish to acknowledge a movement of radical rebirth, grounded in God’s love and drawing on the rich traditions of Interspiritual /Christian practices that have formed disciples in the simple Way of Jesus, The Cosmic Christ.

This contemporary school for conversion which we have called ‘new monasticism,’is now producing a grassroots interspiritual ecumenism and a prophetic witness within the Tau Community of Saint Francis worldwide which is diverse in form, but characterized by the following marks:

1.  Relocation to the abandoned places of the Empire.

2.  Sharing economic resources with fellow community members and the needy among us.

3.  Humble submission to The Cosmic Christ’s Mystical Heart, the whole Family of God.

4.  Geographical proximity to community members who share a common rule of life.

5.  Hospitality to the stranger.

6.  Nurturing common life among members of international community.

7. Peacemaking in the midst of violence and conflict resolution within communities along the lines of Matthew 18.

8.  Lament for racial divisions within all beliefs and our communities combined with the active pursuit of a just reconciliation.

9.  Care for the plot of God’s earth given to us along with support of our local economies.

10.  Support for celibate singles alongside monogamous married couples and their children.

11. Intentional formation in the way of Jesus, The Cosmic Christ and the rule of community along the lines of the old novitiate.

12.  Commitment to a disciplined contemplative life.

May God give us the grace by the power of the Holy Spirit to discern rules for living that will help us embody these marks in our Franciscan Families as signs of the Cosmic Christ’s kingdom for the sake of God’s world.

  1. I have taken great insperation from Brother Sean.
This is the path I have been following all my life.
(finding a balance between light and dark, good and evil, nature and people)
I will keep you in my prayers and future memories.

  2. Like Andrew. This is a path I’ve been following for many years. It is wonderful to find this community. Christ Hesus had been leading me most of my life. But I am a wretched sinner. So our Lird shows even s’more Live for me and asks
Me to follow. I give thanks and Praise to our loving and merciful God who encircles us all in Live.

  3. Please forgive my typos. I find it difficult to type since a stroke I suffered two years ago. I was not able to find a way to go back and correct them.
